I highly recommend figuring out what you're going to do *now*.
Firewire
If you'll be using a firewire disk; I highly suggest mounting it on
one of the workstations *now*, and backing up as you go by sshing into
that workstation periodically, and rsyncing your data.
as an example.. (on computer 'latte', using a disk with a single, fat32 formatted partition):
[plug firewire drive into power and power on]
[plug firewire cable into computer and drive]
mount /latte/1394_data1
rsync -avR --modify-window=1 /img07/data1/pxuser/cowan /latte/1394_data1
You can run this rsync command over and over as often as you like, and it will only bother to copy new/changed files, so it makes it really trivial to efficiently backup as you go.
And even if someone else is sitting in front of latte later on, you can always ssh in from any of the other workstations.
Create a subdirectory for your group's data, and name it such that it may be associated easily with you.
In general, beamline computers should only see disks they're allowed to collect to (but don't assume seeing it means you're allowed to collect to it! collect only where you've explicitly been instructed to collect for a specific beamline).
The course workstations should generally see all the disks under the same name as at the beamline, or in the case of x4, /x4hhmi21/x4user2 instead of just /x4user2, and x9, /bnlx9x/data1 instead of just /data1; the big scheme being /<computer-the-disk-is-actually-on>/<name-of-the-disk>
If a disk isn't mounted on one of the workstations, try just mounting it.
ie.
mount /img07/data1
Check the BNL Proxy/Firewall Documentation (http://www.bnl.gov/cybersecurity/proxy.asp)
Make a directory (with an appropriate name recognizable as you!) in /img07/data1/play/
General Computing Resources (available in 4 computing areas)
Usernames and all passwords will be available from the instructor for the beamline to which you are assigned.
The "cafe" machines are distributed among Conference Room C, the x12b "cyber cafe", the "blue room" near X21, and the x29 "cyber cafe". These are meant to be used as workstations. They should all "see" the data disks and be able to run the processing programs.
Sample data can be found in /img07/data1/tutorial
These directories contain subdirectories px##-#### with crystal subdirectories containing image directories and ascii files 'Proc' that contain details of the data collections. This directory is "read only" to keep it intact and tidy. It was briefly read-write and started to get cluttered; there is probably still some residual clutter. Make your own subdirectories in /img07/data1/play and save your processing data there.
Note to staff/helpers/tutorial directors:
The tutorial dir is owned by the pxsys account; so if you need to make a change,
any pxrr staff should be able to help you. If consensus is that it would be
better read-write, we can change it back.
Please log off computers in the computing rooms when you are done; this helps people know which computers are available.
We have a number of hookups for laptops with DHCP. Both wireless and wired (purple jacks) bnl.org network connections outside the BNL firewall (but still behind a more minimal firewall) will be available in the lecture room in the biology bldg. (463). At the NSLS both wireless and wired (purple [bnl.org] and/or blue [nslusers.org] jacks) network connections outside the BNL firewall (but still behind a more minimal firewall) are available. Wired connections within the BNL firewall will also be available everywhere (beige or sometimes red jacks, or designated "laptop" network cables at each beamline or classroom area).
Don't hesitate to ask for help!
