Archiving to Laptop Computer

Picture of a laptop computer
The recommended archiving system is the use of ftp to store data to a laptop's external drive, such as a firewire system, or to a laptop's internal drive. We find that this scheme allows large amounts of data to be stored relatively quickly and easily on surprisingly inexpensive media. At the same time using this scheme eliminates operating system or filesystem compatibility issues, mount/umount/export complications, and problems regarding device availability or compatibility.

Instructions for using DHCP to connect to BNL's network on a number of operating systems are available on the NSLS web-site. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the use of DHCP on your OS before arriving at BNL.

Don't forget to release your DHCP address manually BEFORE disconnecting from the network

A web-based form must be filled out on-line from the computer being connected within 30 minutes after the initial connection to prevent the network port from being deactivated.

FireWire and USB

***Archiving
as you collect****

Due to increase demand from users we now most of our computers set up for FireWire and USB drives. We have one windows PC (X12C prep lab) with one firewire port and the rest are Linux PC's with two ports each. If your disk is formated FAT32 with no partitions, connect it to the FireWire port and type 'mount /##/1394_data1'. To unmount type 'umount /##/1394_data1'. ## is the computer you are using (x12c-a, java, dunkin etc.). Other formats can be mounted but required more help from us.
Reformat Instructions

***Archiving as you collect****
Once you firewire disk is mounted on a cafe , you can type in the CBASS command line
'set_archive machine:/machine/1394_data1/'
ex. set_archice java/java/1394_data1
This will copy the files as they are collected to the regular beamline disk and to the firewire disk. All files will be put in the px##-#### directory.
This will not copy the processing files.
Run a Rsync command to get those files.
'rsync -av --modify-window=1 /img11/data1/pxuser/group/ px##-####/ /java/1394_data1 .'

DVD writing robot

Another option is to use one of the DVD writing robots to backup your data for either primary or secondary archive purposes. At this time, three robots are available for user use. One at x12c/b and one each for x25 and x29, located at the x29 cafe area. Instructions may be found here.

Other Options

Users may also ftp their data out or use our Anonymous FTP site.
