Frozen crystals are routinely sent to the NSLS by FedEx in advance of scheduled data collections at any of our beam lines. For our remote participation Mail-In Crystallography service this is a well-established standard, and for air travelers this eliminates potential complications and delays with carry-on samples.

Dry shippers (see below) maintain adequately low temperatures for days. When received by our staff at the NSLS, dewars are promptly filled with liquid nitrogen and stored in the X25 prep room. When we return shippers to experimentors they are emptied (dried) shortly before pickup. FedEx delivers dewars twice daily directly to the NSLS stockroom, and picks up returns from the BNL shipping warehouse. Our PX-operators are experienced in organizing dewar return shippments.

If dry shippers are emptied of LN2 just before shipping, FedEx will transport them as non-regulated goods. The dewar should then be prominently labeled with:

DRY SHIPPER
DELICATE UNIT
NON-REGULATED
NON-HAZARDOUS

If you use the word "LIQUID" or do not empty the the dewar, your shippment is a 'Hazardous Material' with all its trappings.
