The design of a new sagitail focusing monocromater for X25 beamline
has introduced the use of small brushed DC motors for motion control of
components. Commercail drivers for such small drives proved unavailable
or overaly expensive.
A simple H-bridge type driver was devloped to handle the new motions.
The inital design constarints were very broad,
- Accept PWM or -+10V control signal
- Have Breaking and/or enable inputs
- Function for 12V or 24V motors
A National Semiconductor(NSC) intagrated Driver H-Bridge device was
adopted as the heart of the new driver. This provided a simple
design that would allow for use of:
- singlended supplys
- PWM/direction input control
- Electronic Breaking
- 6 to 48V Input range
A number of itarations were devloped involving an adjustable current
limiter, the idea was eventualy scrapped after dicussion with
the motor vendor.
The resulting design was extreamaly simple, requireing only the
intagration of a logic supply and optical isolators to support the
NSC driver.
BNL's Instmentation Division was able to produce a PCB to our spec
based on the sechamtic, partlist and an inital layout sketch.
