Note to X25 Users by Lonny Berman, March 5, 2007 |

In the shutdown just concluded, a new beamline optical configuration, described in last January's report, was installed. This new configuration, consisting of a double crystal monochromator with a sagittally-bent second crystal to focus the beam horizontally followed by a vertically focusing mirror, is designed to exploit the properties of the new undulator. The mechanical installation is now complete, and later this month we anticipate taking first light and commencing commissioning. Our goal is to be ready to accommodate users again in late April, in time for the annual RapiData Course. General users will again be accommodated at X25 beginning during the May-August scheduling trimester. In addition, a new micro-diffractometer for X25 has recently been purchased. When it is ready later this year, it will replace the existing diffractometer. Finally, in my report of last January, I called attention to the departures of Mike Becker, the crystallographer who had overseen the X25 macromolecular crystallography program for the previous 5 years or so, and his associate Shai Vaday. Annie Héroux now oversees the X25 macromolecular crystallography program, and Grace Shea-McCarthy and Christopher Dropp now provide instrumentation support. And as they have done in the past, Anand Saxena continues to oversee the scheduling of users and Steve LaMarra continues to provide beamline support and to oversee safety at the beamline and the checklists. The full roster of personnel who are affiliated with X25 appears in the NSLS facility pages. And let's not forget the PX operators who are on duty almost around-the-clock to support and help keep the several PXRR beamlines, including X25, running. At this time, I'd like to call special attention to the individuals who contributed to the engineering, design, and implementation of the beamline upgrade, who are not already mentioned above: Mary Carlucci-Dayton, Tony Lenhard, Sal Pjerov, Tom Kim, Dieter Schneider, and a sizable number of NSLS and PXRR technicians. As always, information about subscribing or unsubscribing to this list, as well as changing subscription attributes, can be found at http://lists.bnl.gov/mailman/listinfo/nsls-x25-l. Regards,
Lonny Berman |
